There is something truly special about springtime in Benalmádena Pueblo. As spring settles over the village and the air fills with the fragrance of orange blossom, the village prepares for one of the most meaningful and atmospheric celebrations of the year: Holy Week (Semana Santa).
From March 29th to April 6th, tradition, devotion, and community come together in a week of unforgettable moments right on La Fonda’s doorstep.
A Week of Tradition & Emotion
Holy Week begins on Domingo de Ramos (Palm Sunday), when locals gather at the Hermitage of Our Lady of the Cross for the Blessing of Palms and Olives. From there, the streets come alive with processions that wind through the village, accompanied by music, candles, and deep-rooted tradition.
Throughout the week, each day brings its own unique atmosphere:
- On Lunes Santo, the touching tradition “A Carnation for the Captive” invites visitors to take part in a symbolic offering.
- Martes Santo fills the streets with one of the most picturesque processions, passing through the charming corners of the pueblo.
- Jueves Santo is a highlight, featuring both a powerful evening procession and the moving “Paso de Benalmádena”, a live reenactment of the Passion performed by over 120 local residents, beginning at 11:00 a.m. and also performed again on Viernes Santo.
- On Viernes Santo,solemnity takes center stage with two processions. Around 7:00 p.m., the procession of the Holy Christ of the Sepulchre and Our Lady of Sorrows departs from the Jardines del Muro. Later, at midnight, Our Lady of Solitude processes from the same location.
The week concludes on Domingo de Resurrección (Easter Sunday) with the joyful procession of the Risen Christ, a beautiful celebration of renewal and hope.
